Magic and islam

Magic is a truth which cannot be denied giving it weight of doubt. Magic is been practiced on earth since the time of two angels, haroot and maroot of Babylon. This incident is written in Quran in the following words;

Al-Quran 2:102
“They pursued whatever the Shaitans recited (and related) to them in the name and authority of King Sulaiman. It was not Sulaiman who disbelieved (or disobeyed). The Shaitans disbelieved (and denied). They taught people the craft of Magic and that (esoteric) art that was revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut at Babylon. Before the two angels would teach that craft to anyone, they would declare, “We are actually just a trial for you. So do not (succumb to temptations and) be the disbelievers.” Yet they studied from those two (angels), that which caused estrangement between a man and his wife. No one could they harm by it, except by Allah’s permission. They studied that which could only hurt them; it did not benefit them (at all). They definitely knew that the one who acquires this (craft) shall have no share in the (blessings of the) life-to-come. And evil indeed was what they purchased (and paid for) with their souls! If only they knew.”

So, people of earth started practicing magic for evil and not for good hence the practice prevailed till today. People are taken under spell for many reasons like for money, property, person jealousy, or simply to harm someone out of grievances. Even our beloved prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w was bewitched by a kafir. This incident in narrated by Aisha r.a. in ahadith books and is given below;

Bukhari Volume 8, Book 75, Number 400:
Narrated 'Aisha:
that Allah's Apostle was affected by magic, so much that he used to think that he had done something which in fact, he did not do, and he invoked his Lord (for a remedy). Then (one day) he said, "O 'Aisha!) Do you know that Allah has advised me as to the problem I consulted Him about?" 'Aisha said, "O Allah's Apostle! What's that?" He said, "Two men came to me and one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet, and one of them asked his companion, 'What is wrong with this man?' The latter replied, 'He is under the effect of magic.' The former asked, 'Who has worked magic on him?' The latter replied, 'Labid bin Al-A'sam.' The former asked, 'With what did he work the magic?' The latter replied, 'With a comb and the hair, which are stuck to the comb, and the skin of pollen of a date-palm tree.' The former asked, 'Where is that?' The latter replied, 'It is in Dharwan.' Dharwan was a well in the dwelling place of the (tribe of) Bani Zuraiq. Allah's Apostle went to that well and returned to 'Aisha, saying, 'By Allah, the water (of the well) was as red as the infusion of Hinna, (1) and the date-palm trees look like the heads of devils.' 'Aisha added, Allah's Apostle came to me and informed me about the well. I asked the Prophet, 'O Allah's Apostle, why didn't you take out the skin of pollen?' He said, 'As for me, Allah has cured me and I hated to draw the attention of the people to such evil (which they might learn and harm others with).' "

Narrated Hisham's father: 'Aisha said, "Allah's Apostle was bewitched, so he invoked Allah repeatedly requesting Him to cure him from that magic)." Hisham then narrated the above narration. (See Hadith No. 658, Vol. 7)

So, if our beloved prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w was effected by magic, every one among us can be, we should supplicate ALLAH day and night for the harms left by magic because it is an evil thing which takes a man into its spell and he does what is is make to do.

Mostly people feel curious to know that how does magic work, the simple answer to this is, people do magic by invoking satan and jins. There are some evil jins which are used for the magic tricks. Even what dajjal will do will also be with the use of jins so, it is evil jins that harm a person and take his mind in their control for some time.

What should one do, if anything like that happens to him? From the hadith above, it is clear that the only cure is to invoke ALLAH and ask for His help because nothing can happen without His will. Second and the most important thing to be noted is that when a person is tried with magic, he should understand that he is weak and he cannot prevent himself from what is unknown to him. Magic should not be taken as an alien and supernatural thing like we see different pirs do. Magic or anything which can harm others, can effect only if ALLAH wills, and the reason of the will of ALLAH is known to Him alone, but we should take it as a sign to invoke ALLAH and to be His fearful servants.

ALLAH swt reveled surah, An-Naas and surah Al-Falak for the evil eye and bad intentions of the people, these two surahs are the best cure against the evils of the minds of bad people. So, these two surahs must be recited daily in order to ward off any bad effects. There are certain other cures to fight against the magic; one of them is mentioned in the hadith given below;

Bukhari Volume 7, Book 71, Number 664:
Narrated Saud:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "If Somebody takes seven 'Ajwa dates in the morning, neither magic nor poison will hurt him that day."

Similarly, there are some other azkars and duas made by our beloved Prophet s.a.w.w  to war off the evil eye and magic and devils, in the following ahadith;

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He said: ‘Your father [i.e., Ibraaheem] used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaa’eel and Ishaaq with these words: A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every bad eye).’”(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Ahaadeeth al-Anbiyaa’, 3120).

With regard to the meaning of laammah (translated here as “bad”), al-Khattaabi said: “What is meant here is every disease or harm that a person may suffer such as insanity or mental disturbance.”

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that Jibreel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: “O Muhammad, are you ill?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek (In the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you).” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Salaam, 4056)

To sum up, magic is true and it exists, it cannot be neglected and it cannot be bound into any scientific definition as some of our muslims do today. They deny any chances or existence of magic and evil but relate everything to a certain mental disease. In doing this and wasting their energies to prove their point, they forget to understand that if a healthy person suddenly gets sick and has mental illness, from where does that mental illness come, and why that healthy person gets it all of a sudden. If you doubt magic or evil or jinns, invoke ALLAH day and night and ask Him for help not the pirs and fakirs who themselves perform magic to cut the effects on you, and remember, magic is a sin which makes a muslim, kafir, because magic is to invoke devil i.e. Satan and it is worshipping him which means the person has just committed shirk which is a sin not to be forgiven (and only ALLAH’s will can change the matter).
