Importance of Controlling Anger In Islam

Anger is one of the most disliked emotions in Islam. And unfortunately, it is the most practiced thing also. Anger takes place in the society where people lose their tolerance and their fear of ALLAH vanishes. Anger takes place where people forget to be helping hands for their brothers and sisters and they only run after fulfilling their needs. Anger takes place in the place where only selfish people live. Anger snatches the smile and happiness from the life and gives anxiety, tension and unknown and unseen troubles that are nonexistent.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: "A strong man is not one who defeats his adversary by wrestling, but one who controls his anger."

 And;
He also said: "No one has swallowed anything excellent in the sight of Allah than the anger he restrains, seeking to please Allah most high." (Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1324)

So, anger does not show us strong, neither can we win any debate by showing anger. And if we control anger, and chose to stay quiet, this only means we have earned a good place in the eyes of ALLAH as indicated in the hadith quoted above.

How can we control our anger? This will be a difficult practice in the beginning but once we start practicing to control our anger, we will slowly learn to wear a smile on our face instead of getting angry at silly and petty issues.

Quran and hadith both tell us to be kind to others and if we do not like something, we should be decent enough to overlook that person or any practice.

In surah furqan ALLAH swt says that HIS true slaves are the people who do not speak ill even if some irritating people address them.

25: 63
“The (faithful) slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish ones address them answer: Peace;”

The prophet of ALLAH Muhammad s.a.w.w was the person who was taunted the most by HIS family and then the people who used to call Him saidq and amin. HE bears the harsh attitude of the people of makkah but never said a harsh word back. HE s.a.w.w should be the example for us. If HE was so nice towards even His enemies, we are his followers, why can’t we be like Him!

 Abdullah ibn Haarith, radi Allahu 'anhu, said, "I have never seen anyone who smiled more than Allah's Messenger." [Jami Tirmidhi]

so, wearing a smile encourages others to listen to you, and with the polite manner and decent ways, one can earn the place which cannot be earned from anger or showing attitude.

But it is also a fact that we cannot have that patience level which was given to our beloved prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w. so what to do if we get angry! There is ahadith with the solution.

Narrated Atiyyah as-Sa'di:

 AbuWa'il al-Qass said: We entered upon Urwah ibn Muhammad ibn as-Sa'di. A man spoke to him and made him angry. So he stood and performed ablution; he then returned and performed ablution, and said: My father told me on the authority of my grandfather Atiyyah who reported the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) as saying: Anger comes from the devil, the devil was created of fire, and fire is extinguished only with water; so when one of you becomes angry, he should perform ablution. (Dawud :: Book 41 : Hadith 4766

He also said:
 "Anger is a burning coal. Don't you see your eyebrows wide and eyes reddish? So when one of you feels angry, sit down if standing and lie down if sitting.”

Therefore, we should refrain from pleasing shetan and strive hard to please ALLAH swt because ALLAH swt loves us the most in this world.
