Importance of Following Sunnah

Sunnah is called everything done, said or approved by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w, the last and final messenger of ALLAH swt. Following His footsteps is what we have to do if we want to find salvation and peace in our lives.

Whatever prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w ordered us or liked for us to do, is beneficial for us. And not only beneficial in worldly means but also earns us reward even if we adopt a small action as sunnah. ALLAH swt has said in Quran in several places that in order to be a good muslim, one must obey ALLAH and His Messenger s.a.w.w.

Allah [Exalted and Sublime be He] said in Quran: 3: 31

“Say (O Muhammad (peace be upon him) to mankind): "If you (really) love Allâh then follow me (i.e. accept Islâmic Monotheism, follow the Qur'ân and the sunnah), Allâh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."”

This verse says that if we really love ALLAH swt, then we have to follow Muhammad s.a.w.w to give proof of our love and respct for ALLAH the exalted. It is because the life of Muhammad s.a.w.w is the best example for us to follow to find salvation. Then in the next part of the verse, ALLAH swt says that if we do what HE said, HE will love us back and will forgive our sins. Thus, the easiest way to be good and pious muslims is to follow sunnah.

In another place, ALLAH swt says: 42:10
"And in whatsoever you differ, the decision thereof is with Allâh (He is the ruling Judge). (And say O Muhammad (peace be upon him) to these polytheists:) Such is Allâh, my Lord in Whom I put my trust, and to Him I turn (in all of my affairs and) in repentance."

This verse says that since Muhammad s.a.w.w referred to ALLAH swt and HIS commands in all His affairs, we also should do the same i.e. if times of dispute, we should refer to Quran and Sunnah to resolve the disputes with sincerity and clear intentions and ALLAH will be judging us.

When we say we have to follow sunnah, it does not mean we are ignoring the Quran, but it means, by following sunnah we are actually obeying the order of ALLAH swt.

ALLAH swt says in Quran: Surah Aal-e-Imran[3]:132

"And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy."

In another place, ALLAH swt says: surah najam- verses 2-4

Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred. Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only a Revelation revealed.

these two verses are very clear in their meaning that we have to obey ALLAH swt and HIS Messenger s.a.w.w in order to get the mercy and blessing of ALLAH swt.

And whatever Muhammad s.a.w.w did in His life, it was all meant to be good for us. and today, when science and logic proves the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w as beneficial we feel proud and happy that we are Muslims. Therefore, it is all in our side to follow the footsteps of Muhammad s.a.w.w to lead a happy time here and in hereafter.
