Importance of Commitment

We all commit to do something or to abstain from other. Commitment is an act of keeping the word or doing what one ought to do. This act is one of the most important acts of a successful life. Many a times, people do not do what they say, or put the other way, people fail to keep their words or promises.

Making a commitment and then failing to realize an act of dishonesty unless a concrete reason is behind it. For a muslim, the life starts with a commitment, which must never be broken. And that is to believe in Allah as the only God and to never ever join any other being with Him in the worship. So, Islam starts with a sacred commitment. Then, there are other promises, like a muslim must believe that Muhammad pbuh is the last and final prophet of Allah. We commit to abstain from all the evil and do all the good that we can.

Almost every muslim will prove true to his word when it comes to the total belief in Allah and His final prophet Muhammad pbuh, but when it comes to the other obligations, many of us fail. In the daily life, failing to keep the commitment is lack of self confidence and lack of self belief which leads to dishonesty. But when it comes to religion, lack of commitment is lack of iman. It is the lack of iman that mostly, muslims are found out speaking against the evil trends of the world and yet following the same trends.

When one commits to the faith of Islam, then he becomes stranger in this world. It is a proven fact. In every age, the true servants of Allah were always the strangers in their own houses, among their own people. Prophet Muhammad pbuh said;

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 425:

Narrated Mujahid:
'Abdullah bin 'Umar said, "Allah's Apostle took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." The sub-narrator added: Ibn 'Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death."
Thus, what oen really needs to do is to obey Allah, and nothing else. If obeying Allah means being an alien, then be an alien. This is the purest form of commitment with Allah swt. But, in every age, only few could keep it. Allah swt say in glorious Quran;
[007:102] In most of them, We did not find (any commitment to) the covenant. We found most of them to be the defiant evildoers.
Thats exactly how muslims of today are. Very few of us are good at our word and very many of us are just like the others. Basically, islam means to be different. This difference is our strength of iman. And the stronger the iman is, the more committed one is with Allah.

The companions of prophet Muhammad pbuh were so committed to him pbuh that they were willing to give their lives for it. Hazrat abu bakar siddique r.a. Never mind a snake to bite him, but he never wanted any harm to Muhammad pbuh. this was the level of his commitment. We all should follow their examples. In this way, we might become strangers, but we will be the known in the hereafter.
