Allah SWT has said in the Holy Quran:
The scholars of Islam has divided sihir into different types on the scale of severity. But their two broad classifications are
1: Sihr haqeeqy
This is the type of magic which comprises of the worst and the most dangerous kind of magic. Its effects are real. For example, the above verse mentioned about sowing hatred between husband and wife. Thus, a type of magic which does the real harm falls under the category of real or haqeeqy magic.
2: Sihr Takhyeel
This is the type of magic which alters the mind of people. Mostly people report that they see things which otherwise do not exist. Or they see things which change into something else all of a sudden. But no such change is seen by others. Thus, this kind of magic changes the ideology of people.
These types of magic involve devils/jinns. Just like human beings, there are jinns. Just like there exist wrong people , there exist kafir Jinn. These kafir jinns are used by magicians to practice evil.
3: practiced by hand
then there is the form of magic which is practiced by hands. Magicians use tricks to deceive the viewers. This type of magic does not need any devils. But still, these tricks which make people believe that some other power is used is wrong. Because it weakens the belief of a Muslim.
There are people who claim knowledge and hidden powers, they use all types of magic to sow discord among people, to kill people, to destroy people and to get their hands on money and wealth.
Prophet Muhammad pbuh strictly forbade to use magic in the following hadith;
[002:102] “They followed what the evil ones gave out (falsely) against the power of Solomon: the blasphemers Were, not Solomon, but the evil ones, teaching men Magic, and such things as came down at babylon to the angels Harut and Marut. But neither of these taught anyone (Such things) without saying: "We are only for trial; so do not blaspheme." They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by God's permission. And they learned what harmed them, not what profited them. And they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the Hereafter. And vile was the price for which they did sell their souls, if they but knew!”The above verse says that magic is nothing but harm. It would bring no happiness but sorrow. Also, this verse indicates that no one can harm no one except by Allah's leave. If some one succeeds to harm others by the use of magic, then its no his success but he is driven further into this false belief that he can harm others.

Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0161:Scholars say that whatever the type of magic may be, the use of it is forbidden. Because one cannot buy any benefit by bewitching others. Secondly, magic is shirk as it means to take help from satan. And thirdly, there is no success in a successful magic practice as it deactivates and it only effects other by the will of Allah.
It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: Avoid the seven noxious things. It was said (by the hearers): What are they, Messenger of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Associating anything with Allah, magic, killing of one whom God has declared inviolate without a just cause, consuming the property of an orphan, and consuming of usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers, but unwary.
