Many people are interested in knowing about the interpretation of dreams and mystery behind them. Allah swt and His Rasool SAW have guided us in this matter to great extent.
Some of the important information related to dreams in light of Quran and sunnah is as follows:
Dreams of Prophets are parts of revelation:
Allah swt has mentioned the incident of Ibraheem aliehis salam in Quran .He was shown in his dream that he was sacrificing his son .He shared this dream with his son Ismaeel aliehis salam .After listening this dream Ismael aliehis salam asked him to follow the commands of Allah swt .This incident has been narrated in the following verses of Quran:
And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allâh), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Inshâ' Allâh (if Allâh will), you shall find me of As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.)." Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allâh), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering); And We called out to him: "O Abraham! . You have fulfilled the dream (vision)!" Verily! Thus do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers ). (As-Saaffat 37: 102-105)
Similarly Allah swt has narrated the true dream of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam in which he had a vision of entering Kaaba with his companions.Allah swt has said in the Holy Quran:
Indeed Allâh shall fulfill the true vision which He showed to His Messenger (SAW) [i.e. the Prophet SAW saw a dream that he has entered Makkah along with his companions, having their (head) hair shaved and cut short] in very truth. Certainly, you shall enter AlMasjidalHarâm; if Allâh wills, secure, (some) having your heads shaved, and (some)having your head hair cut short, having no fear. He knew what you knew not, and He granted besides that a near victory.( Al-Fath 48 : 27)
In the same manner Yousaf aliehis salam had a dream that eleven stars sun and moon were prostrating before him and his dream was fulfilled in a way that his parents and eleven brothers prostrated before him when he became ruler of Egypt. This dream was fulfilled after a long time .
All of these incidents prove that dreams of prophets are revelations from Allah swt and are materialized afterwards.
Prophet Yousaf aliehis salam was great interpreter of dreams:
Yousaf aliehis salam was great messenger of Allah swt and he was bestowed with the miracle that Allah swt gave him the knowledge of interpretation of dreams. Some of his interpretations have been mentioned in the Holy Quran.
When Yousaf aliehis salam was sent to the prison he met two prisoners who narrated their dreams to him
One prisoner saw saw he was pressing wine .Yousaf aliehis salam interpreted that he would be appointed to serve wine to the king and he was appointed to serve wine to king according to his interpretation.
Second prisoner saw that he was carrying bread on his head and birds were eating from it .Yousaf aliehis salam interpreted his dream that he would be hanged and he was hanged according to his interpretation.
This incident of dreams and their interpretation have been narrated in the following verses of Holy Quran:
And there entered with him two young men in the prison. One of them said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) pressing wine." The other said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head and birds were eating thereof." (They said): "Inform us of the interpretation of this. Verily, we think you are one of the Muhsinûn (doers of good )." He said: "No food will come to you (in wakefulness or in dream) as your provision, but I will inform (in wakefulness) its interpretation before it (the food) comes. This is of that which my Lord has taught me. Verily, I have abandoned the religion of a people that believe not in Allâh and are disbelievers in the Hereafter (i.e. the Kan'âniûn of Egypt who were polytheists and used to worship sun and other false deities). "And I have followed the religion of my fathers, - Ibrahîm (Abraham), Ishâque (Isaac) and Ya'qûb (Jacob) [ã ], and never could we attribute any partners whatsoever to Allâh. This is from the Grace of Allâh to us and to mankind, but most men thank not (i.e. they neither believe in Allâh, nor worship Him). "O two companions of the prison! Are many different lords (gods) better or Allâh, the One, the Irresistible? "You do not worship besides Him but only names which you have named (forged), you and your fathers, for which Allâh has sent down no authority. The command (or the judgement) is for none but Allâh. He has commanded that you worship none but Him (i.e. His Monotheism), that is the (true) straight religion, but most men know not. "O two companions of the prison! As for one of you, he (as a servant) will pour out wine for his lord (king or master) to drink; and as for the other, he will be crucified and birds will eat from his head. Thus is the case judged concerning which you both did inquire." (Yusuf 12:36-41)
When he was in prison he asked the person who was going to be appointed to serve wine to tell the king about his innocence and problems. It was unlucky that the person forgot to tell the king about innocence and misery of Yousaf aliehis salam and Yousaf aliehis salam remained in prison for many years. After many years King of Egypt saw a dream which was not being understood by any man in the palace.Yousaf aliehis salam was then approached and he told about the exact interpretation of dream.
This incident has been narrated in the following verses of Holy Quran:
And he said to the one whom he knew to be saved: "Mention me to your lord (i.e. your king, so as to get me out of the prison)." But Shaitân (Satan) made him forget to mention it to his Lord [or Satan made [(Yûsuf (Joseph)] to forget the remembrance of his Lord (Allâh) as to ask for His Help, instead of others]. So [Yûsuf (Joseph)] stayed in prison a few (more) years. And the king (of Egypt) said: "Verily, I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows, whom seven lean ones were devouring - and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry. O notables! Explain to me my dream, if it be that you can interpret dreams." They said: "Mixed up false dreams and we are not skilled in the interpretation of dreams." Then the man who was released (one of the two who were in prison), now at length remembered and said: "I will tell you its interpretation, so send me forth." (He said): "O Yûsuf (Joseph), the man of truth! Explain to us (the dream) of seven fat cows whom seven lean ones were devouring, and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry, that I may return to the people, and that they may know." . [(Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "For seven consecutive years, you shall sow as usual and that (the harvest) which you reap you shall leave in ears, (all) - except a little of it which you may eat. "Then will come after that, seven hard (years), which will devour what you have laid by in advance for them, (all) except a little of that which you have guarded (stored). "Then thereafter will come a year in which people will have abundant rain and in which they will press (wine and oil)." (Yusuf 12:42-49)
Yousaf aliehis salam was grateful to Allah swt on this blessing of knowledge of interpretation of dreams:
Yousaf aliehis salam was not proud of this great knowledge of interpretation of dreams. He was grateful to Allah swt on this blessing of knowledge .His humble and submissive attitude is reflected in his dua narrated in Holy Quran.
He invoked Allah swt in the following manner:
"My Lord! You have indeed bestowed on me of the sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of dreams; The (only) Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Walî (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the Hereafter, cause me to die as a Muslim (the one submitting to Your Will), and join me with the righteous." (Yusuf 12:49)
Dreams are forty sixth part of revelation and dream of believer will be true near the end of the time:
It has been narrated in hadiths that true and meaningful dreams are forty sixth part of revelation and the dreams of believers will be true near the day of judgement .
Some of the hadiths addressing this issue are as follows:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "When the Day of Resurrection approaches, the dreams of a believer will hardly fail to come true, and a dream of a believer is one of forty-six parts of revelation, and whatever belongs to revelation can never be false." Muhammad bin Sirin said, "But I say this." He said, "It used to be said, 'There are three types of dreams: The reflection of one's thoughts and experiences one has during wakefulness, what is suggested by Satan to frighten the dreamer, or glad tidings from Allah. So, if someone has a dream which he dislikes, he should not tell it to others, but get up and offer a prayer." He added, "He (Abu Huraira) hated to see a Ghul (i.e., iron collar around his neck in a dream) and people liked to see fetters (on their feet in a dream). The fetters on the feet symbolizes one's constant and firm adherence to religion." And Abu 'Abdullah said, "Ghuls (iron collars) are used only for necks."(Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 , Hadith 144)
This hadith has also been narrated with slight differences of words as follows:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When the time draws near (when the Resurrection is near) a believer's dream can hardly be false. And the truest vision will be of one who is himself the most truthful in speech, for the vision of a Muslim is the forty-fifth part of Prophecy, and dreams are of three types: one good dream which is a sort of good tidings from Allah; the evil dream which causes pain is from the satan; and the third one is a suggestion of one's own mind; so if any one of you sees a dream which he does not like he should stand tip and offer prayer and he should not relate it to people, and he said: I would love to see fetters (in the dream), but I dislike wearing of necklace, for the fetters is (an indication of) one's steadfastness in religion. The narrator said: I do not know whether this is a part of the hadith or the words of Ibn Sirin.( Muslim : Book 29 , Hadith 5621)
Two short hadiths telling that dream is 46th part of revelation are as follows:
1.Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah's Apostle said, "A good dream (that comes true) of a righteous man is one of forty-six parts of prophetism." (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 , Hadith 112)
2.Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "All that will be left of prophecy after me are the mubashshirat." They said, "What are the mubashshirat, Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The true dream which a man who is salih sees - or which is shown to him - is a forty-sixth part of prophecy." (Malik : Book 52 , Hadith 52.1.3)
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam use to see true dreams before start of revelation:
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam got revelation of Allah swt for 23 years. Before the start of revelation he used to see true dreams. This has been mentioned in detail in the following hadith:
Narrated 'Aisha:
The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah's Apostle was in the form of good righteous (true) dreams in his sleep. He never had a dream but that it came true like bright day light. He used to go in seclusion (the cave of) Hira where he used to worship(Allah Alone) continuously for many (days) nights. He used to take with him the journey food for that (stay) and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again for another period to stay, till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him in it and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, "I do not know how to read." (The Prophet added), "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and again asked me to read, and I replied, "I do not know how to read," whereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and asked me again to read, but again I replied, "I do not know how to read (or, what shall I read?)." Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me and then released me and said, "Read: In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists). Has created man from a clot. Read and Your Lord is Most Generous...up to..... ..that which he knew not." (96.15) (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 ,Hadith 111)
Nothing is left of prophetic attributes except good dreams:
Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam is the last among all prophets of Allah swt and all the prophetic attributes have been finished after him except true and good dreams. The hadiths highlighting this issue are as follows:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "Nothing is left of the prophetism except Al-Mubashshirat." They asked, "What are Al-Mubashshirat?" He replied, "The true good dreams (that conveys glad tidings)." (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 ,Volume 87 ,Hadith 119)
Another hadith conveying the same message is as follows:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talha from Zufar ibn Sasaca from his father from Abu Hurayra that when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, left the morning prayer, he would say, "Has any of you had a dream last night? All that will remain of prophecy after me will be the true dream ."( Malik :Book 52 , Hadith 52.1.2)
One should seek refuge of Allah swt and spit three times on left if he sees a bad dream:
When a person sees a bad dream he feels sick and whole psychology of person is affected after seeing bad dream.Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam has told the solution to this problem .This solution has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Abu Salama:
I used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard Abu Qatada saying, "I too, used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard the Prophet saying, "A good dream is from Allah, so if anyone of you saw a dream which he liked, he should not tell it to anybody except to the one whom he loves, and if he saw a dream which he disliked, then he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil and from the evil of Satan, and spit three times (on his left) and should not tell it to anybody, for it will not harm him. " (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 , Hadith 168)
A short hadith highlighting same point is as follows:
Narrated Abu Qatada Al-Ansari:
(a companion of the Prophet and one of his cavalry men) "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "A good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan; so, if anyone of you had a bad dream which he disliked, then he should spit on his left and seek refuge with Allah from it, for it will not harm him." (Sahih Bukhari :Book 9, Volume 87 , Hadith 133)
A companion of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam saw a bad dream and shared it with Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam .Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam forbade him from doing it again. The hadith is as follows:
Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a desert Arab and said: I saw in a dream that I had been beheaded and I had been following it (the severed head). Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) reprimanded him saying: Do not inform about the vain sporting of devil with you during the night( Muslim : Book 29 , Hadith 5640)
Shaitan cannot take shape of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam:
One must keep this thing in mind that shaitan cannot take the shape of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam and any one one who sees him has actually seen him. This fact has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated Abu Qatada:
The Prophet said, "A good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan. So whoever has seen (in a dream) something he dislike, then he should spit without saliva, thrice on his left and seek refuge with Allah from Satan, for it will not harm him, and Satan cannot appear in my shape."(Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 , Hadith 124)
Another hadith says:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "Whoever has seen me in a dream, then no doubt, he has seen me, for Satan cannot imitate my shape. (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 ,Hadith 123)
This issue has also been discussed in another hadith as follows:
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
I heard the Prophet saying, "Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in his wakefulness, and Satan cannot imitate me in shape." Abu 'Abdullah said, "Ibn Sirin said, 'Only if he sees the Prophet in his (real) shape.'" (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 ,Volume 87 ,Hadith 122)
This hadith indicates that shaitan cannot take the real shape of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam.
Another hadith says:
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
The Prophet said, "Name yourselves after me (by my name), but do not call yourselves by my Kuniya, and whoever sees me in a dream, he surely sees me, for Satan cannot impersonate me (appear in my figure). And whoever intentionally ascribes something to me falsely, he will surely take his place in the (Hell) Fire. (Sahih Bukhari : Book 8 , Volume 73 , Hadith 217 )
One should be careful about ascribing some thing to Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam because a false saying may lead the person to hell fire.
It is a sin to tell lies about dreams or fabricate dreams:
Many people tell lies about dreams and donot take it as a sin. They feel as they are telling a story or novel to entertain people. Some people do so to impress others. They should keep in mind that a person will be held accountable before Allah swt of he tells lies about dreams .This fact has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
The Prophet said, "Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see, will be ordered to make a knot between two barley grains which he will not be able to do; and if somebody listens to the talk of some people who do not like him (to listen) or they run away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and whoever makes a picture, will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be ordered to put a soul in that picture, which he will not be able to do." (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 ,Volume 87 ,Hadith 165)
Another hadith telling about sin of fabricating dream is as follows:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said, "The worst lie is that a person claims to have seen a dream which he has not seen." (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9, Volume 87 , Hadith 167)
One should take bath if he/she has night fall in dream:
When one reaches the puberty he/she sees wet dreams and whenever some one sees wet dream he must take bath. This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) was asked about a person who found moisture (on his body or clothes) but did not remember the sexual dream. He replied: He should take a bath. He was asked about a person who remembered that he had a sexual dream but did not find moisture. He replied: Bath is not necessary for him. Umm Salamah then asked: Is washing necessary for a woman if she sees that (in her dream)? He replied: Yes. Woman are counterpart of men. (Abu Dawud : Book 1 , Hadith 236)
Another hadith discussing the same issue is as follows:
Anas b. Malik reported: Umm Sulaim who was the grandmother of Ishaq came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) in the presence of 'A'isha and said to him: Messenger of Allah, in case or woman sees what a man sees in dream and she experiences in dream what a man experiences (i. e. experiences orgasm)? Upon this 'A'isha remarked: O Umm Sulaim, you brought humiliation to women;may your right hand be covered with dust. He (the Holy Prophet) said to 'A'isha: Let your hand be covered with dust, and (addressing Umm Sulaim) said: Well, O Umm Sulaim, she should take a bath if she sees that (i. e. she experiences orgasm in dream). (Muslim : Book 3 ,Hadith 607)
Same hadith has been narrated with some additional information as follows:
Anas b. Malik reported that Umm Sulaim narrated it that she asked the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) about a woman who sees in a dream what a man sees (sexual dream). The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon bi m) said: In case a woman sees that, she must take a bath. Umm Sulaim said: I was bashful on account of that and said: Does it happen? Upon this the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Yes (it does happen), otherwise how can (a child) resemble her? Man's discharge (i. e. sperm) is thick and white and the discharge of woman is thin and yellow; so the resemblance comes from the one whose genes prevail or dominate. (Muslim : Book 3 , Hadith 608)
Method of Taking bath and washing clothes after wet dreams:
Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam is role model for us .He guided us in all spheres of life.He also guided his ummah in matters of taking bath. How he used to take bath has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated Maimuna:
The Prophet took the bath of Janaba. (sexual relation or wet dream). He first cleaned his private parts with his hand, and then rubbed it(that hand) on the wall (earth) and washed it. Then he performed ablution like that for the prayer, and after the bath he washed his feet. (Sahih Bukhari : Book 1 , Volume 5 , Hadith 260)
How to wash clothes after wet dreams:
If someone sees the semen on his /her clothes he/she does not need to wash whole cloth.He/she should wash only that portion where there is semen.
It has been narrated in the following hadith:
Abdullah b. Shihab al-Khaulani reported: I stayed in the house of 'A'isha and had a wet dream (and perceived its effect on my garment), so (in the morning) I dipped both (the clothes) in water. This (act of mine) was watched by a maid-servant of A'isha and she informed her. She (Hadrat A'isha) sent me a message: Whatprompted you to act like this with your clothes? He (the narrator) said: I told that I saw in a dream what a sleeper sees. She said: Did you find (any mark of the fluid) on your clothes? I said: No. She said: Had you found anything you should have washed it. Incase I found that (semen) on the garment of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) dried up, I scraped it off with my nails. (Muslim : Book 2 ,Hadith 572)
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam used to interpret dreams:
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam was blessed with knowledge of interpretation of dream and he used to ask his companions about their dreams and then he was interpreting these dreams for them. This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Samura bin Jundub:
Allah's Apostle very often used to ask his companions, "Did anyone of you see a dream?" So dreams would be narrated to him by those whom Allah wished to tell. (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 ,Hadith 171)
Dream of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam about paradise and people of hell fire:
Once prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam told his companions about a dream in which he had detail vision about people of hell and paradise. This dream has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated Samura bin Jundub:
Allah's Apostle very often used to ask his companions, "Did anyone of you see a dream?" So dreams would be narrated to him by those whom Allah wished to tell.
One morning the Prophet said, "Last night two persons came to me (in a dream) and woke me up and said to me, 'Proceed!' I set out with them and we came across a man Lying down, and behold, another man was standing over his head, holding a big rock. Behold, he was throwing the rock at the man's head, injuring it. The rock rolled away and the thrower followed it and took it back. By the time he reached the man, his head returned to the normal state. The thrower then did the same as he had done before. I said to my two companions, 'Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?' They said, 'Proceed!' So we proceeded and came to a man Lying flat on his back and another man standing over his head with an iron hook, and behold, he would put the hook in one side of the man's mouth and tear off that side of his face to the back (of the neck) and similarly tear his nose from front to back and his eye from front to back. Then he turned to the other side of the man's face and did just as he had done with the other side. He hardly completed this side when the other side returned to its normal state. Then he returned to it to repeat what he had done before. I said to my two companions, 'Subhan Allah! Who are these two persons?' They said to me, 'Proceed!' So we proceeded and came across something like a Tannur (a kind of baking oven, a pit usually clay-lined for baking bread)." I think the Prophet said, "In that oven there was much noise and voices." The Prophet added, "We looked into it and found naked men and women, and behold, a flame of fire was reaching to them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried loudly. I asked them, 'Who are these?' They said to me, 'Proceed!' And so we proceeded and came across a river." I think he said, ".... red like blood." The Prophet added, "And behold, in the river there was a man swimming, and on the bank there was a man who had collected many stones. Behold. while the other man was swimming, he went near him. The former opened his mouth and the latter (on the bank) threw a stone into his mouth whereupon he went swimming again. He returned and every time the performance was repeated, I asked my two companions, 'Who are these (two) persons?' They replied, 'Proceed! Proceed!' And we proceeded till we came to a man with a repulsive appearance, the most repulsive appearance, you ever saw a man having! Beside him there was a fire and he was kindling it and running around it. I asked my companions, 'Who is this (man)?' They said to me, 'Proceed! Proceed!' So we proceeded till we reached a garden of deep green dense vegetation, having all sorts of spring colors. In the midst of the garden there was a very tall man and I could hardly see his head because of his great height, and around him there were children in such a large number as I have never seen. I said to my companions, 'Who is this?' They replied, 'Proceed! Proceed!' So we proceeded till we came to a majestic huge garden, greater and better than I have ever seen! My two companions said to me, 'Go up and I went up' The Prophet added, "So we ascended till we reached a city built of gold and silver bricks and we went to its gate and asked (the gatekeeper) to open the gate, and it was opened and we entered the city and found in it, men with one side of their bodies as handsome as the handsomest person you have ever seen, and the other side as ugly as the ugliest person you have ever seen. My two companions ordered those men to throw themselves into the river. Behold, there was a river flowing across (the city), and its water was like milk in whiteness. Those men went and threw themselves in it and then returned to us after the ugliness (of their bodies) had disappeared and they became in the best shape." The Prophet further added, "My two companions (angels) said to me, 'This place is the Eden Paradise, and that is your place.' I raised up my sight, and behold, there I saw a palace like a white cloud! My two companions said to me, 'That (palace) is your place.' I said to them, 'May Allah bless you both! Let me enter it.' They replied, 'As for now, you will not enter it, but you shall enter it (one day) I said to them, 'I have seen many wonders tonight. What does all that mean which I have seen?' They replied, 'We will inform you: As for the first man you came upon whose head was being injured with the rock, he is the symbol of the one who studies the Quran and then neither recites it nor acts on its orders, and sleeps, neglecting the enjoined prayers. As for the man you came upon whose sides of mouth, nostrils and eyes were torn off from front to back, he is the symbol of the man who goes out of his house in the morning and tells so many lies that it spreads all over the world. And those naked men and women whom you saw in a construction resembling an oven, they are the adulterers and the adulteresses;, and the man whom you saw swimming in the river and given a stone to swallow, is the eater of usury (Riba) and the bad looking man whom you saw near the fire kindling it and going round it, is Malik, the gatekeeper of Hell and the tall man whom you saw in the garden, is Abraham and the children around him are those children who die with Al-Fitra (the Islamic Faith)." The narrator added: Some Muslims asked the Prophet, "O Allah's Apostle! What about the children of pagans?" The Prophet replied, "And also the children of pagans." The Prophet added, "My two companions added, 'The men you saw half handsome and half ugly were those persons who had mixed an act that was good with another that was bad, but Allah forgave them.'"(Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 ,Hadith 171)
A dream highlighting importance of tahajjud prayers in addition to obligatory prayers:
Allah swt has highlighted the importance of Tahajjud prayers in Quran and has declared it an important prayer on Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam .The verse highlighting importance of Tahajjud is as follow:
And in some parts of the night (also) offer the Salât (prayer) with it (i.e. recite the Qur'an in the prayer), as an additional prayer (Tahajjud optional prayer Nawâfil) for you (O Muhammad SAW). It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqâman Mahmûda (a station of praise and glory, i.e. the highest degree in Paradise!).( Al-Isra 17 : 79)
Abdullah bin Umer radi Allahu anhu also saw a dream about this prayer which highlights its importance. This dream has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
If a man saw a dream during the lifetime of the Prophet he would narrate it to the Prophet. Once I wished to see a dream and narrate it to the Prophet I was young, unmarried, and used to sleep in the Mosque during the lifetime of the Prophet. I dreamt that two angels took me and went away with me towards the (Hell) Fire which looked like a well with the inside walls built up, and had two side-walls like those of a well. There I saw some people in it whom I knew. I started saying, "I seek Refuge with Allah from the (Hell) Fire, I seek Refuge with Allah from the (Hell) Fire." Then another angel met the other two and said to me, "Do not be afraid." I narrated my dream to Hafsa who, in her turn, narrated it to the Prophet. He said, "What an excellent man Abdullah is if he only observes the night prayer." (Salem, a sub-narrator said, "Abdullah used not to sleep at night but very little hence forward." (Sahih Bukhari : Book 5 ,Volume 57 , Hadith 83)
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam interpreted dream of Umme Haram binte Milhan :
Umme haram binte Malhan is a great female companion of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam .She narrated her dream to Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam .Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam interpreted this dream and his interpretation was materialized after many years. The whole incidence has been discussed in the following hadith:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah's Apostle used to visit Um Haram bint Milhan she was the wife of 'Ubada bin As-Samit. One day the Prophet visited her and she provided him with food and started looking for lice in his head. Then Allah's Apostle slept and afterwards woke up smiling. Um Haram asked, "What makes you smile, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Some of my followers were presented before me in my dream as fighters in Allah's Cause, sailing in the middle of the seas like kings on the thrones or like kings sitting on their thrones." (The narrator Ishaq is not sure as to which expression was correct). Um Haram added, 'I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah, to make me one of them;" So Allah's Apostle invoked Allah for her and then laid his head down (and slept). Then he woke up smiling (again). (Um Haram added): I said, "What makes you smile, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Some people of my followers were presented before me (in a dream) as fighters in Allah's Cause." He said the same as he had said before. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah to make me from them." He said, "You are among the first ones." Then Um Haram sailed over the sea during the Caliphate of Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, and she fell down from her riding animal after coming ashore, and died. (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 ,Hadith 130)
Milk is sign of knowledge in dream:
Rasool salal laho aliehi waslam has told that milk is sign of knowledge in dreams. The hadith discussing the fact is as follows:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "While I was sleeping, I was given a bowl full of milk (in a dream), and I drank of it to my fill until I noticed its wetness coming out of my nails, and then I gave the rest of it to 'Umar." They (the people) asked, "What have you interpreted (about the dream)? O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "(It is Religious) knowledge."(Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 , Hadith 134)
Length of shirt indicates practice of deen in dream:
Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam has interpreted length of shirt in dream as practice of deen. This has been discussed in the following hadith:
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri:
Allah's Apostle said, "While I was sleeping, some people were displayed before me (in a dream). They were wearing shirts, some of which were merely covering their breasts, and some a bit longer. Then there passed before me, 'Umar bin Al-Khattab wearing a shirt he was dragging it (on the ground behind him.)" They (the people) asked, "What have you interpreted (about the dream) O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "The Religion." (Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 ,Volume 87 ,Hadith 136)
Stream is sign of good deeds in dream:
A companion of prophet Usman bin Mazoon died and prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said that he did not know about his fate. This created anxiety in family members of Usman bin Mazoon .Later on one of the female member saw a good dream about her .The incidence has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Kharija bin Zaid bin Thabit:
Um Al-'Ala an Ansari woman who had given the Pledge of allegiance to Allah's Apostle said, "'Uthman bin Maz'un came in our share when the Ansars drew lots to distribute the emigrants (to dwell) among themselves, He became sick and we looked after (nursed) him till he died. Then we shrouded him in his clothes. Allah's Apostle came to us, I (addressing the dead body) said, "May Allah's Mercy be on you, O Aba As-Sa'ib! I testify that Allah has honored you." The Prophet said, 'How do you know that?' I replied, 'I do not know, by Allah.' He said, 'As for him, death has come to him and I wish him all good from Allah. By Allah, though I am Allah's Apostle, I neither know what will happen to me, nor to you.'" Um Al-'Ala said, "By Allah, I will never attest the righteousness of anybody after that." She added, "Later I saw in a dream, a flowing spring for 'Uthman. So I went to Allah's Apostle and mentioned that to him. He said, 'That is (the symbol of) his good deeds (the reward for) which is going on for him.'( Sahih Bukhari : Book 9 ,Volume 87 , Hadith 145)
Those men went and threw themselves in it and then returned to us after the ugliness (of their bodies) had disappeared and they became in the best shape." As for the man you came upon whose sides of mouth, nostrils and eyes were torn off from front to back, he is the symbol of the man who goes out of his house in the morning and tells so many lies that it spreads all over the world. And those naked men and women whom you saw in a construction resembling an oven, they are the adulterers and the adulteresses;, and the man whom you saw swimming in the river and given a stone to swallow, is the eater of usury (Riba) and the bad looking man whom you saw near the fire kindling it and going round it, is Malik, the gatekeeper of Hell and the tall man whom you saw in the garden, is Abraham and the children around him are those children who die with Al-Fitra (the Islamic Faith)." There I saw some people in it whom I knew. They ought not to have said things of which they have no knowledge, but I saw (in a dream) that a post was fixed in a green garden. At the top of the post there was a handhold and below it there was a servant. I was asked to climb (the post). So I climbed it till I got hold of the handhold." Then I narrated this dream to Allah's Apostle. Allah's Apostle said, "'Abdullah will die while still holding the firm reliable handhold (i.e., Islam)." Same incident is narrated in another hadith with some more details :
Kharasha b. Hurr reported: I was sitting in a circle in the mosque of Medina and there was an old man, quite handsome. He was 'Abdullah b. Salim. He was telling good things to them (to the people sitting in that company). As he stood up (to depart) the people said: He who is desirous of looking at a person from amongst the people of Paradise should see him. I said: By Allah, I will follow him, and would try to know his residence. So I followed him and he walked on until he reached the outskirts of Medina. He then entered his house. I sought permission from him to get in, and he granted me the permission, saying: My nephew, what is the need (that has brought you here)? I said to him: As you stood up, I heard people say about you: He who is desirous of seeing a person from among the people of Paradise should look at him. So I became desirous of accompanying you. He ('Abdullah b. Salim) said: It is Allah Who knows best about the people of Paradise. I would, however, narrate to you as to why they said like it. (The story is) that while I was asleep (one night) there came to me a person (in the dream) who asked me to stand up. (So I stood up) and he caught hold of my hand and I walked along with him, and, lo, I found some paths on my left and I was about to set out upon them. Thereupon he said to me Do not set yourself on (them) for these are the paths of the leftists (denizens of Hell-fire). Then there were paths leading to the right side, whereupon he said: Set yourself on these paths. We came across a hill and he said to me: Climb up, and I attempted to climb up that I fell upon my buttocks. I made several attempts (but failed to succeed). He led until he came to a pillar (so high) that its upper end touched the sky and its base was in the earth. And there was a handhold at its upper end. He said to me Climb over it. I said: How can I climb upon it, as its upper end touches the sky? He cought hold of my hand and pushed me up and I found myself suspended with the handhold. He then struck the pillar and it fell down, but I remained attached to that handhold until it was morning (and the dream was thus over). I came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and narrated it to him. He said: So far as the paths which you saw on your left are concerned, these are paths of the leftists (denizens of Hell) and the paths which you saw on your right, these are the paths of the rightists (the dwellers of Paradise) and the mountain represents the destination of the martyrs which you would not be able to attain. The pillar implies the pillar of Islam. and so far as the handhold is concerned, it implies the handhold of Islam, and you would hold to it fastly until you would meet death. And this is Thabit bin Al-Qais who will answer you on my behalf." The Prophet then went away. I asked Ibn Abbas about the dream Allah's Apostle had mentioned. Ibn Abbas said, "Someone told me that the Prophet said, "When I was sleeping, I saw in a dream that two gold bangles were put in my hands, and that frightened me and made me dislike them. Then I was allowed to blow on them, and when I blew at them, both of them flew. Then I interpreted them as two liars who would appear.' One of them was Al-'Ansi who was killed by Fairuz in Yemen and the other was Musailima Al-Kadhdbab."( Sahih Bukhari : Book 5 , Volume 59 , Hadith 662)
Another short hadith tells the same dream :
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "We (Muslims) are the last (to come) but (will be) the foremost (on the Day of Resurrection)." Allah's Apostle further said, ''While sleeping, I was given the treasures of the world and two golden bangles were put in my hands, but I felt much annoyed, and those two bangles distressed me very much, but I was inspired that I should blow them off, so I blew them and they flew away. Then I interpreted that those two bangles were the liars between whom I was (i.e., the one of San'a' and the one of Yamama)." (Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 , Hadith 160)
Dream of Umer bin Khattab and Abdullah bin Zaid about Azan/Call to prayers
Muslims in the beginning of Islam were unaware of the method to call towards the prayers and different proposals were under discussion. In the mean while Umer bin Khattab and Abdullah bin Zaid had dreams in which they were shown complete Azan. This Azan was than confirmed by Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam.
Whole incident has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated AbuUmayr ibn Anas:
AbuUmayr reported on the authority of his uncle who was from the Ansar (the helpers of the Prophet): The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) was anxious as to how to gather the people for prayer.
The people told him: Hoist a flag at the time of prayer; when they see it, they will inform one another. But he (the Prophet) did not like it. Then someone mentioned to him the horn.
Ziyad said: A horn of the Jews. He (the Prophet) did not like it. He said: This is the matter of the Jews. Then they mentioned to him the bell of the Christians. He said: This is the matter of the Christians. Abdullah ibn Zayd returned anxiously from there because of the anxiety of the Apostle (peace be upon him). He was then taught the call to prayer in his dream. Next day he came to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upo him) and informed him about it.
He said: Apostle of Allah, I was between sleep and wakefulness; all of a sudden a newcomer came (to me) and taught me the call to prayer. Umar ibn al-Khattab had also seen it in his dream before, but he kept it hidden for twenty days.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me (Umar): What did prevent you from saying it to me?
He said: Abdullah ibn Zayd had already told you about it before me: hence I was ashamed.
Then the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Bilal, stand up, see what Abdullah ibn Zayd tells you (to do), then do it. Bilal then called them to prayer.
AbuBishr reported on the authority of AbuUmayr: The Ansar thought that if Abdullah ibn Zayd had not been ill on that day, the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) would have made him mu'adhdhin.( Abu Dawud : Book 2 , Hadith 498)
A good dream about Hajj of Tamattu appreciated by Abdullah bin Abbas radi Allahu anhu:
Hajj e Tamattu is the method of Hajj in which Umrah is done with Hajj. This method of Hajj was approved and encouraged by Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam and it is the most superior form of Hajj but it was discouraged by some prominent figures .A person came to Abdullah bin Abbas to inquire about this Hajj.Abdullah bin Abbas recommended him to do so.Later he had a dream about this Hajj.
This dream has been narrated in the following hadith:
Narrated Abu Jamra:
I asked Ibn Abbas about Hajj-at-Tamattu'. He ordered me to perform it. I asked him about the Hadi (sacrifice). He said, "You have to slaughter a camel, a cow or a sheep, or you may share the Hadi with the others." It seemed that some people disliked it (Hajj-at-Tamattu). I slept and dreamt as if a person was announcing: "Hajj Mabrur and accepted Mut'ah (Hajj-At-Tamattu')" I went to Ibn Abbas and narrated it to him. He said, "Allah is Greater. (That was) the tradition of Abu Al-Qasim (i.e. Prophet). Narrated Shu'ba that the call in the dream was. "An accepted 'Umra and Hajj-Mabrur. "(Sahih Bukhari : Book 2 ,Volume 26 , Hadith 747)
Another hadith tells that ibne Abbas radi Allahu anhu was so pleased with the person who had seen the dream that he was ready to give him a portion of his property.
The hadith is as follows
Narrated Shu'ba:
Abu Jamra Nasr bin 'Imran Ad-Duba'i said, "I intended to perform Hajj-at-Tamattu' and the people advised me not to do so. I asked Ibn Abbas regarding it and he ordered me to perform Hajj-at-Tammatu'. Later I saw in a dream someone saying to me, 'Hajj-Mabrur (Hajj performed in accordance with the Prophet's tradition without committing sins and accepted by Allah) and an accepted 'Umra.' So I told that dream to Ibn Abbas. He said, 'This is the tradition of Abu-l-Qasim.' Then he said to me, 'Stay with me and I shall give you a portion of my property.' " I (Shu'ba) asked, "Why (did he invite you)?" He (Abu Jamra) said, "Because of the dream which I had seen."(Sahih Bukhari : Book 2 ,Volume 26 ,Hadith 638)
Dream of Companion of a prophet about a person who committed suicide:
A person who was basically a good person but committed suicide due to an illness was shown to his fellow companion in a dream as Allah had forgiven him. This dream was narrated to Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam. What was the response of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasala has been narrated in the following hadith:
It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that Tufail son of Amr al-Dausi came to the Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Do you need strong, fortified protection? The tribe of Daus had a fort in the pre-Islamic days. The Apostle (may peace be upon him) declined this offer, since it (the privilege of protecting the Holy Prophet) had already been reserved for the Ansar. When the Apostle (may peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, Tufail son of Amr also migrated to that place, and there also migrated along with him a man of his tribe. But the climate of Medina did not suit him, and he fell sick. He felt very uneasy. So he took hold of an iron head of an arrow and cut his finger-joints. The blood streamed forth from his hands, till he died. Tufail son of Amr saw him in a dream. His state was good and he saw him with his hands wrapped. He (Tufail) said to him: What treatment did your Allah accord to you? He replied. Allah granted me pardon for my migration to the Apostle (may peace be upon him): He (Tufail) again said: What is this that I see you wrapping up your hands? He replied: I was told (by Allah): We would not set right anything of yours which you damaged yourself. Tufail narrated this (dream) to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). Upon this he prayed: O Allah grant pardon even to his hands. (Muslim : Book 1 , Hadith 211)
Dream of Umer radi Allahu anhu about his death:
Umer radi Allahu anhu had a dream which made him think that he would die soon. So he advised his fellows about certain important issues. This dream and his advice has been narrated in the following hadith:
Ma'dan b. Talha reported: 'Umar b. Khattab, delivered the Friday sermon and he made a mention of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr. He (further) said: I saw in a dream that a cock pecked me twice, and I perceive that my death is near. Some people have suggested me to appoint my successor. And Allah would not destroy His religion. His caliphate and that with which He sent His Apostle (may peace be upon him) If death approaches me soon, the (issue) of Caliphate (would be decided) by the consent of these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) remained well pleased till his death. And I know fully well that some people would blame me that I killed with these very hands of mine some persons who apparently professed (Islam). And if they do this (blame me) they are the enemies of Allah, and are non-believers and have gone astray. And I leave not after me anything which to my mind seems more important than Kalala. And I never turned towards the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) (for guidance) more often than this Kalala, and he (the Holy Prophet) was not annoyed with me on any other (issue) than this: (And he was so perturbed) that he struck his fingers on my chest and said: Does this verse. that is at the end of Surat al-Nisa'. which was revealed in the hot season not suffice you? And if I live longer I would decide this (problem so clearly) that one who reads the Qur'an, or one who does not read it, would be able to take (correct), decisions (under its light). He ('Umar) further said: Allah! I call You witness on these governors of lands, that I sent them to (the peoples of these lands) so that they should administer justice amongst them, teach them their religion and the Sunnah of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him), and distribute amongst them the spoils of war and refer to me that which they find difficult to perform. O people. you eat 'these two plants and these are onions and garlic. and I find them nothing but repugnant for I saw that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) sensed the odour of these two from a person in a mosque, he was made to go to al-Baqi'. So he who eats it should (make its odour) die by cooking it well. (Muslim : Book 4 , Hadith 1151)
Prophets are flawless in interpretation; Anyone other than prophets can make mistake in interpretation:
Once a person came to Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam and told him about his dream.Abu bakar radi Allahu anhu took permission to interpret this dream. After his interpretation Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam confirmed it partially .This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "I saw in a dream, a cloud having shade. Butter and honey were dropping from it and I saw the people gathering it in their hands, some gathering much and some a little. And behold, there was a rope extending from the earth to the sky, and I saw that you (the Prophet) held it and went up, and then another man held it and went up and (after that) another (third) held it and went up, and then after another (fourth) man held it, but it broke and then got connected again." Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Apostle! Let my father be sacrificed for you! Allow me to interpret this dream." The Prophet said to him, "Interpret it." Abu Bakr said, "The cloud with shade symbolizes Islam, and the butter and honey dropping from it, symbolizes the Quran, its sweetness dropping and some people learning much of the Qur'an and some a little. The rope which is extended from the sky to the earth is the Truth which you (the Prophet) are following. You follow it and Allah will raise you high with it, and then another man will follow it and will rise up with it and another person will follow it and then another man will follow it but it will break and then it will be connected for him and he will rise up with it. O Allah's Apostle! Let my father be sacrificed for you! Am I right or wrong?" The Prophet replied, "You are right in some of it and wrong in some." Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Prophet! By Allah, you must tell me in what I was wrong." The Prophet said, "Do not swear."( Bukhari : Book 9 , Volume 87 ,Hadith 170)
This hadith proves that anyone other than prophets can make mistake in interpretation of dreams. So interpretation of any alim or scholar is estimation and there are chances of mistake in it.
