Some important issues related to dress code, appearance and hairstyle of men and women in Islam:
Dress is one of the great blessings of Allah swt and Allah swt has revealed in Holy Quran :
O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc.) and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, that they may remember (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth). (Al-A'raf 7:26)
This verse makes it clear that one benefit of the dress is that it conceals our inner physical defects which could be obvious in the absence of the dress
Similarly on another instance Allah swt says:
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Who has forbidden the adoration with clothes given by Allâh, which He has produced for his slaves, and At-Taiyibât [all kinds of Halâl (lawful) things] of food?" Say: "They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) exclusively for them (believers) on the Day of Resurrection (the disbelievers will not share them)." Thus We explain the Ayât (Islâmic laws) in detail for people who have knowledge. (Al-A'raf 7:32)
There is a hadith of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam which addresses the same issue:
It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu that the Apostle of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam observed: He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise. A person (amongst his hearers) said: Verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people (Muslim : Book 1 ,Hadith 164)
These two verses and hadith make it clear that Allah swt has allowed us to beautify ourselves with our dresses but there are certain conditions which have to be kept in mind by Muslim men and women while wearing a dress .Some of these conditions are as follows:
Muslim men must not wear Silk
Muslim women must be completely covered when going outside or before non mehrams
Muslim men cannot wear gold
Muslim women can wear gold after paying zakat of the jewellery
Muslim men and women should not wear dress similar to those of opposite genders
Muslim men and women should not wear religious dresses of other religions
Muslim men can wear silver ring
Muslim men cannot wear silver necklace
Muslim men should not cut or shave their beards
Muslim men should not enlarge their moustaches
Hair cutting of Muslim men should be homogenous
Artificial hair are not allowed
Muslim women can cut hair provided that it does not resemble men and non believers
Muslim women cannot gather their hair on the top of their head
Muslim men and women cannot dye their hair with black colour
Underarms ,pubic hair and nails should be cut with in forty days
Dress of men and women should not be tight to show physical features
Dress of men should be above ankles
Plucking is not allowed for Muslim women
Muslim women cannot use perfumes in public
Muslim women can do make up but cannot do wudoo with nailpolish.
Muslim men are not allowed to do colourful make up
Pure red colour is prohibited for men and the best colour of dress is white
Wearing turban is sunnah, prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam used to wear black turban.
Combing should be from centre
Shoes should be worn while sitting
Clothes and shoes should be worn from right side
Muslim men and women should wear both shoes and should not wear one shoe
Muslim men and women should not cover their one shoulder and leave other as uncovered
Now all these points will be elaborated in light of authentic Hadiths
1.Muslim men must not wear silk:
Muslim men are not allowed to wear silk .This has been mentioned in the following hadiths:
1.Narrated Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al Ashari radi Allahu anhu that he heard the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."(Sahih Bukhari :Vol.7 Hadith No.5590)
2. Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila: We were sitting in the company of Hudhaifa who asked for water and a Magian brought him water. But when he placed the cup in his hand, he threw it at him and said, "Had I not forbidden him to do so more than once or twice?" He wanted to say, "I would not have done so," adding, "but I heard the Prophet saying, "Do not wear silk or Dibaja, and do not drink in silver or golden vessels, and do not eat in plates of such metals, for such things are for the unbelievers in this worldly life and for us in the Hereafter." (Bukhari : Book 7 , Volume 65 ,Hadith 337)
3.Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib radi Allahu anu: Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam ordered us to do seven things and forbade us to do other seven. He ordered us: to follow the funeral procession. to visit the sick, to accept invitations, to help the oppressed, to fulfill the oaths, to return the greeting and to reply to the sneezer: (saying, "May Allah be merciful on you," provided the sneezer says, "All the praises are for Allah,"). He forbade us to use silver utensils and dishes and to wear golden rings, silk (clothes), Dibaj (pure silk cloth), Qissi and Istabraq (two kinds of silk cloths). (Sahih Bukhari : Book 2 ,Volume 23 , Hadith 331)
4.Ibn Umar reported that Umar saw Utarid al-Tamimi standing in the market (and selling) the silk garments, and he was the person who went to (courts of) kings and got (high prices) for these garments from them. Umar said: Allah's Messenger I saw 'Utarid standing in the market with a silk garment; would that you buy and wear it for (receiving) the delegations of Arabs when they visit you? I (the narrator) said: I think he ('Umar) also said: You may wear it on Friday (also). Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) said: He who wears silk in this world has no share in the Hereafter. Later on when these silk garments were presented to Allah's Massenger (may peace be upon him) he presented one silk garment to 'Umar and presented one also to Usama b. Zaid and gave one to 'Ali b. Abu 'Talib. saying: Tear them and make head coverings for your ladies. 'Umar came carrying his garment and said: Allah's Messenger, you have sent it to me, whereas you had said yesterday about the (silk) garment of Utarid what you had to say. He (the Holy Prophet) said: I have not sent it to you that you wear it, but I have sent It to you so that you may derive benefit out of it; and Usama (donned) the garment (presented to him) and appeared to be brisk, whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) looked at him with a look by which he perceived that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) did not like what he had done. He said: Allah's Messenger. why is it that you look at me like this. whereas you yourself presented it to me? He said: I never sent it to you to wear it, but I sent It to you so that you may tear it and make out head covering for your ladies. (Muslim :Book 24 , Hadith 5143)
5.'Asim al-Abwal reported on the authority Abu Uthman saying: 'Umar wrote to us when we were in Adharba'ijan saying: 'Utba b. Farqad, this wealth is neither the result of your own labour nor the result of the labour of your father, nor the result of the labour of your mother, so feed Muslims at their own places as you feed (members of your family and yourselves at your own residence), and beware of the life of pleasure, and the dress of the polytheists and wearing of silk garments, for Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) forbade the wearing of silk garments, but only this much, and Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) raised his. forefinger and middle finger and he joined. them (to indicate that only this much silk can be allowed in the dress of a man). 'Asim said also: This is what is recorded in the lette., (sent to us), and Zuhair raised his two fingers (to give an idea of the extent to which silk may be used). (Muslim : Book 24 ,Hadith 5151)
6. Abu Musa Ash’ari radi Allahu anhu reported that Allah’s Messenger salal laho aliehi wasalam said, “Wearing silk and gold is forbidden to the men of my ummah. But (they are) allowed to their women.”(At-Tirmidhi:Book27,Chapter 1,Hadith 1726; Nisaee:Hadith 5163)
7.Abu 'Uthman reported: While we were with 'Utba b. Farqad there came a letter of 'Umar (containing the instructions) that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) had said: None should wear silk (with the exception of so much) but he will have nothing of it in the Hereafter. Abu 'Uthman said: To the extent of two fingers which are close to the thumb, and I was shown the (silk) borders of the Tayalisa mantle (which were about two fingers in breadth and I saw them (Muslim : Book 24 ,Hadith 5153)
2.Muslim women must be completely covered when going outside or before non mehrams:
Home is a better place for Muslim women and her stay at home has always been preferred .
Allah swt says:
And stay in your houses( (Al-Ahzab 33:33)
But she is allowed to fulfill needs like education, medical treatment, job and family visits
This permission has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated 'Aisha radi Allahu anha:The Prophet salal laho aliehi waslam said to his wives, "You are allowed to go out for your needs".(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 4, Hadith 149)
While fulfilling these needs she has to meet the Islamic dress code mentioned in Quran and Hadith. When we study Quran and Hadith we come to know that Niqab is an obligation on Muslim women from Allah swt. This issue has been discussed in depth in Quran and Hadith .
On one instance Allah swt says:
O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allâh is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-Ahzab 33:59)
On another instance Allah swt says:
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husband's sons, their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islâm), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful. (An-Nur 24:31)
This verse makes it clear that Muslim women should even conceal the voice of their adornment .So how can we expect that they are allowed to show their faces and hands.
While discussing the issue of women who have reached old age Quran says:
And as for women past child-bearing who do not expect wed-lock, it is no sin on them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show their adornment. But to refrain (i.e. not to discard their outer clothing) is better for them. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (An-Nur 24:60)
When women reach old ages they are given relaxation to show their faces and hands and this specific permission cannot be generalized by any means rather it highlights the importance of covering face and hands for young girls and women.
Some of the hadiths highlighting this issue are as follows:
1.Narrated Aisha radi Allahu anha The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqia at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. 'Umar radi Allahu anhu used to request the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam"Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so(without command of Allah swt). One night Sauda bint Zam'a radi Allahu anha the wife of the Prophet went out at 'Isha' time and she was a tall lady. 'Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes). (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 4, Hadith 148)
2. Narrated Safiya bint Shaiba: Aisha radi Allahu anha used to say: "When (the Verse): 'They should draw their veils over their necks and bosoms,' was revealed, (the ladies) cut their waist sheets at the edges and covered their faces with the cut pieces." (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 6, Book 60, Hadith 282 )
If the women of the first generation were covering their faces with cut pieces what stops contemporary women from covering their faces?
3.Narrated Anas radi Allahu anhu: The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam stayed for three days between Khaibar and Medina, and there he consummated his marriage to Safiyya bint Huyai radi Allahu anha. I invited the Muslims to the wedding banquet in which neither meat nor bread was offered. He ordered for leather dining-sheets to be spread, and dates, dried yoghurt and butter were laid on it, and that was the Prophet's wedding banquet. The Muslims wondered, "Is she (Saffiyya) considered as his wife or his slave girl?" Then they said, "If he orders her to veil herself, she will be one of the mothers of the Believers; but if he does not order her to veil herself, she will be a slave girl. So when the Prophet proceeded from there, he spared her a space behind him (on his she-camel) and put a screening veil between her and the people(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 22)
4.Narrated Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anha: The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam stayed with Safiya bint Huyai radi Allahu anha for three days on the way of Khaibar where he consummated his marriage with her. Safiya was amongst those who were ordered to use a veil. (Sahih Bukhari :Volume 5, Book 59, Hadith 523)
Hadith no 3 and 4 clearly tells that a slave girl is not commanded to cover her face and all free muslim women are commanded to cover their faces
5.Safiyyah, daughter of Shaybah radi Allahu anha, said that Aisha radi Allahu anha mentioned the women of Ansar, praised them and said good words about them. She then said: When Surah an-Nur came down, they took the curtains, tore them and made head covers of them (Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 32, Hadith 4089)
6.Narrated Ummul Mu'minin Umm Salamah, radi Allahu anhaWhen the verse "That they should cast their outer garments over their persons" was revealed, the women of Ansar came out as if they had crows over their heads by wearing outer garments ( Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 32, Hadith 4090)
Hadith 5 and 6 clearly indicate that women of first generation took the meanings of the verse to cover their head and face with the outer garments. How can we think that modernist women and their supporters understand the meanings of hadith more than the women of first generation.
7. Narrated Thabit ibn Qays radi Allahu anhu: A woman called Umm Khallad radi Allahu anha came to the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam while she was veiled. She was searching for her son who had been killed (in the battle) Some of the Companions of the Prophet (saws) said to her: You have come here asking for your son while veiling your face? She said: If I am afflicted with the loss of my son, I shall not suffer the loss of my modesty. The Apostle of Allah (saws) said: You will get the reward of two martyrs for your son. She asked: Why is that so, Apostle of Allah? He replied: Because the people of the Book have killed him. (Sunan Abu Dawud : Book 14, Hadith 2482)
This hadith clearly indicates that Muslim women of first generation were not ready to give up their veil even when they were afflicted with shocks and pains.
Some of the people who are not in favour of face niqab quote this hadith:
Narrated Anas ibn Malik radi Allahu anhu: The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam brought Fatimah a slave which he donated to her. Fatimah wore a garment which, when she covered her head, did not reach her feet, and when she covered her feet by it, that garment did not reach her head. When the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam saw her struggle, he said: There is no harm to you: Here is only your father and slave. (Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 32, Hadith 4094)
They forget that father and slave are mehram of the women and women can come in front of them. The result of the above mentioned discussion is that women must cover themselves from head to feet when going out or before non mehrams.
3. Muslim men cannot wear gold:
Muslim men are not allowed to wear gold like Muslim women it has been mentioned in the following hadiths:
1. Narrated by Abu Musa Ash'ari radi Allahu anhu The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said: ‘Wearing silk and gold has been made unlawful for the males of my Ummah and lawful for their females.’ ( At-Tirmidhi :Hadith 808)
2.Narrated by Ali ibn Abu Talib radi Allahu anhu: The Prophet of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam took silk and held it in his right hand, and took gold and held it in his left hand and said: "both of these are prohibited to the males of my community"( Abu Dawud, Book 27, Hadith 4046)
4. Muslim women can wear gold after paying zakat of the jewellery:
Allah swt has commanded in Holy Quran to pay charity on the gold and silver.
Allah swt says:
On the Day when that (Al-Kanz: money, gold and silver, etc., the Zakât of which has not been paid) will be heated in the Fire of Hell and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, (and it will be said unto them):-"This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves. Now taste of what you used to hoard." (At-Tawbah 9:35)
Some of the hadiths which advise Muslim women to avoid using the gold without paying zakat on it are as follows:
1.Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu reported Allah’s Messenger salal laho aliehi wasalam as saying, “If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection would come, plates of fire would be beaten out for him; these would then be heated in the fire of Hell and his sides, his forehead and his back would be cauterized with them. Whenever these cool down, (the process is) repeated during a day the extent of which would be fifty thousand years, until judgment is pronounced among servants.” (Muslim)
2.Narrated Abdullah bin Amr bin Al ‘Aas radi Allalhu anhu that a woman once came to the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam with her daughter who was wearing two thick bracelets of gold. The Prophet (saw) asked if she paid zakah on the bracelets, so she answered in the negative, so he replied by asking if she wished for Allah to replace them with bracelets of fire on the Day of Judgment. She then removed the bracelets and gave them to the Prophet (saw) and said, “These are for Allah and His Messenger.” (Musnad Ahmad,Sunan Abu Dawood, Nisaee, Tirmidhee)
3.Ummul momieen Aisha radi Allahu anha narrated :Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam came to me and saw me wearing silver rings, whereupon, he asked: ‘What is this, Aisha?’ I replied: ‘I made them to adorn myself for you, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Did you pay their zakat?’ I said: ‘No, or what Allah wishes.’ Then he said: ‘their punishment in Hell is enough for you (Narrated by Abu Dawud in his Sunan with a strong chain (Zakat), Daraqutni in his Sunan, and Bayhaqi in his Sunan (4:140))
4.Narrated Amr ibn Shu’ayb from his father from his grandfather: Two women with gold bracelets on their wrists came to the Prophet. The Prophet said: ‘Do you want Allah to make you wear bracelets of fire on the Day of Judgment?’ They answered: ‘No.’ He said ‘Then pay the zakat which is due on what you wear on your wrists” (Narrated by Tirmidhi, who alluded to a weakness in his two chains, while Ahmad narrates it through two stronger chains in his Musnad (2:204, 5:378), and both al-Nasa'i and Abu Dawud with another two good chains in their Sunan, Book of Zakat)
Asma bint Yazid reported: "My aunt and I, while wearing gold bracelets, went to the Prophet. He asked: 'Did you pay their zakat?' She related that they had not. The Prophet said: 'Do you not fear that Allah will make you wear a bracelet of fire? Pay its zakat." (Musnad Ahmad :Hadith 6:461 with a good chain, as Haythami declared in Majma` al-zawa'id (3:67)
On what weight of Jewellery Zakat is due?
The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said about gold:There is nothing upon you until it reaches twenty dinars.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
This is equal to 7.5 tolas of gold according to today’s measurement.
Prophet salal laho aliehi waslam said about silver :There is no charity upon other than five ‘Awaq.(Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This is equal to 52 tolas according to today’s measurement.
5. Muslim men and women should not wear dress similar to those of opposite genders:
Islam does not allow any dress ,shoes or ornament in which there is an imitation of opposite gender.
Following hadith makes this point clear:
1.Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Prophet salal laho aliehi waslaam cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men, and he said: “Throw them out of your houses.(Sahih Bukhari: 5885).
2.Narrated Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu said: The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam cursed the man who wears women’s clothing and the woman who wears men’s clothing. (Sunan Abu Dawood :Hadith 4098 and classed as saheeh by al-Albani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. )
3. Ummul momineen Aishah radi Allahu anha said: The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam cursed masculinized women. (Abu Dawood :Hadith 4099 classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. )
4.Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu said that he heard the Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: "He is not of us who imitates women nor is he of us who imitates men." (Al-Hakim)
5.Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu reported that the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said:
"Three people will not enter paradise, and Allaah will not look to them on the Day of Judgement: the one who is disobedient to his parents, the woman who imitates men and the ad-dayooth." (Musnad Ahmad)
Therefore men should not wear any dress or print which is similar to the dress or print of women and women must not wear any dress or print which is similar to the dress or print of the men.
6.Muslim men and women should not wear religious dresses of other religions:
Muslim men and women should not wear religious dresses of the other religion because it is damaging for the faith and practices of the Muslims.
Following Hadiths make this point clear:
1.Reported by Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: Act against contrary to the polytheists (Muslim : Hadith 500)
2.The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: Whosoever imitates a nation is amongst them. (Sunan Abu Dawud,)
These two hadiths make it clear that Muslim women must not wear the dress of the nuns and locket having design of cross on it .Similarly Muslims should not wear the turbans like Sikhs or shave hair like Buddhists .They should wear their own dresses and should avoid copying others
7.Muslim men can wear silver ring:
A Muslim man is allowed to wear silver ring because it was sunnah of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam to wear silver ring as mentioned in the following hadith:
Anas radi Allahu anhu said: “When the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam wanted to send a letter to the Romans, he was told that they would not read any letter unless it had a seal on it, so he took a ring of silver. It is as if I can see it shining on his hand, and engraved on it were the words ‘Muhammad the Messenger of Allaah.’” ( Sahih Bukhari: Hadith 5537; Muslim: Hadith 2092).
8.Muslim men cannot wear silver necklace or other silver ornaments:
Muslim men cannot wear silver necklace or other silver ornaments because it is an imitation with women which is prohibited in Islam .This command has been mentioned in the following hadiths:
(Sunan Abu Dawood :Hadith 4099 classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood )
9.Muslim men should not cut or shave their beards.
Beard is tradition of all prophets and Muslim men are not allowed to shave or trim their beards because it is imitation with kuffars and Abdullah Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu relates that: "He who imitates the kuffar (non-believers) and dies in that state, he will be raised up with them on the Day of Qiyamat (Judgement).
Following hadiths make this issue clear:
1.Abu Darda radi Allahu anhu reported that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said :I have no connection with one who shaves, shouts and tears his clothing eg. in grief or affliction.(Muslim: Hadith 501)
2. Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu narrated that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam says: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard flow (Grow)." (Muslim: Hadith 498)
3.Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu says Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam ordered us to trim the moustache closely and spare the beard( Muslim:Hadith 449)
4. Reported by Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: Act against contrary to the polythesists, trim closely the moustache and grow the beard. (Muslim : Hadith 500)
5.Reported by Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said :Trim closely the moustache and grow the beard. (Muslim:Hadith 501)
6.Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu reported that Rasulullah Salal lahu aliehi wasallam said: "Anyone who shaves has no claim to the mercy of Allah"(Tibrani)
The style of Ammar Bin Yaasir, Abdullah Ibn Umar, Sayyidina Umar, Abu Hurairah and Jaabir rizwanullahee aliehim ajmaeen, indicate that all used to keep beards that were one fist length or more.
Jaabir radi Allahu anhu had said: "We used to grow long beards and only during Hajj and Umrah did we trim them to the required length (i.e. fist length)."
But as far as sunnah and command of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam is concerned it is very clear that he commanded his Ummah to grow beard to full length without any cutting or trimming
10.Muslim men should not enlarge their moustaches:
Muslim men should trim their moustaches and the hair of moustaches should not touch the upper lips of the men . This has been mentioned in the following hadiths:
1.Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu narrated that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam says: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard flow (Grow)." (Muslim: Hadith 498)
2. Umar radi Allahu anhu says Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam ordered us to trim the moustache closely and spare the beard( Muslim:Hadith 449)
3. Reported by Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: Act against contrary to the polytheists, trim closely the moustache and grow the beard. (Muslim : Hadith 500)
4.Reported by Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said :Trim closely the moustache and grow the beard. (Muslim:Hadith 501)
11.Hair cutting of Muslim men should be homogenous:
Hair cutting of Muslim men should be homogeneous and this should not be done in the way that half of the hair are cut and half are left uncut or they are partially shaven and and are partially left untouched
Following hadith clarifies the point:
Narrated Ubaidullah bin Hafs radi Allahu anhu Umar bin Nafi' told him that Nafi', Maula 'Abdullah had heard 'Umar saying, "I heard Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam forbidding Al-Qaza'." 'Ubaidullah added: I said, "What is Al-Qaza'?" 'Ubaidullah pointed (towards his head) to show us and added, "Nafi' said, 'It is when a boy has his head shaved leaving a tuft of hair here and a tuft of hair there." Ubaidullah pointed towards his forehead and the sides of his head. 'Ubaidullah was asked, "Does this apply to both girls and boys?" He said, "I don't know," but Nafi' said, -The boy." 'Ubaidullah added, "I asked Nafi' again, and he said, 'As for leaving hair on the temples and the back part of the boy's head, there is no harm, but Al-Qaza' is to leave a tuft of hair on his forehead unshaved while there is no hair on the rest of his head, and also to leave hair on either side of his head.' (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 803)
12.Artificial hair are not allowed :
Women have been using fake and artificial hair since long whereas artificial and fake hair are not allowed in Islam.
This has been clearly indicated in the following hadiths:
1.,Narrated Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman radi Allahu anhu, That he heard Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan (talking) on the pulpit in the year when he performed the Hajj. He took a tuft of hair that was in the hand of an orderly and said, "O people of Medina! Where are your learned men? I heard the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam forbidding such a thing as this (i.e. false hair) and he used to say, 'The Israelis were destroyed when their ladies practiced this habit (of using false hair to lengthen their locks)." (Sahih Bukhari : Volume 4, Book 56, Hadith 674)
2.Narrated 'Aisha radi Allahu anha an Ansari woman gave her daughter in marriage and the hair of the latter started falling out. The Ansari women came to the Prophet salal laho alieihi wasalamand mentioned that to him and said, "Her (my daughter's) husband suggested that I should let her wear false hair." The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said, "No, (don't do that) for Allah sends His curses upon such ladies who lengthen their hair artificially." (Bukhari : Volume 7, Book 62, Number 133)
3.Narrated Jabir ibn Adullah radi Allahu anhu that Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam reprimanded that a woman should add anything to her head (in the form of artificial hair)(Muslim).
13.Muslim women can cut hair provided that it does not resemble men and non believers:
Muslim women cannot cut hair if they resemble hair cut of men and those of kafir women but if they are not short like men and are not familiar with famous kafir hair cut women can do so because there is no ruling on this issue.
Following hadiths make the issue clear:
(Abu Dawood :Hadith 4099 classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. )
4..Reported by Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: Act against contrary to the polytheists (Muslim : Hadith 500)
5.The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: Whosoever imitates a nation is amongst them. (Sunan Abu Dawud)
So Muslim women while cutting their hair should avoid resemblance with Kuffars and men.
14. Muslim women cannot gather their hair on the top of their head:
Muslim women are not allowed to gather their hair on the top of the head and this has been prohibited by Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam as mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam said: There are two types, amongst the denizens of Hell, I have yet not seen them. One possessing whips like the tail of an ox and they flog people with them. (The second one) the women who would be naked in spite of their being dressed, who are seduced (to wrong paths) and seduce others with their hair high like humps. These women would not get into Paradise and they would not perceive the odour of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from such and such distance (from great distance). (Sahih Muslim: Hadith 6840)
15.Muslim men and women cannot dye their hair with black colour:
Muslim men and women have been encouraged to dye their white hair as mentioned in the following hadiths:
1.Narrated Abu Hurairah radi anhu Allahu Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam said:The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their grey hair), so you shall do the opposite of what they do (i.e. dye your grey hair and beards).(Sahih Bukhari:Volume 4, Book 56, Hadith) 668
2.Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah radi Allahu anhu When Abu Quhafah (father of Abu Bakr) radi Allahu anhu came in the Year of Victory or on the Day of Victory (to the Prophet to pledge his allegiance to him) his head and his beard were white like hyssop. He (the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam) commanded or the women were commanded by him that they should change this with something (that the colour of his hair should be changed). (Muslim)
3.In a long hadith Narrated by'Ubaid Ibn Juraij radi Allahu anhu the part of hadith about the dyeing of hair with Henna says: no doubt I saw Allah's Apostle dyeing his hair with it and that is why I like to dye (my hair with it)(Muslim)
4.It was reported that Usman ibn Abdullah ibn Wahb said: we entered upon Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha and she brought out a lock of hair of the Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam to show us, and it was dyed red. (Sahih Bukhari: Hadith 5558. Ibn Maajah :Hadith 3623 and Ahmad :Hadith 25995 added: “… with henna and katam.”)
5.The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam said: “The best things to use to change grey hair are henna and katam.” (Tirmidhi: Hadith 1753; Abu Dawood:Hadith 4205; Ibn Maajah:Hadith 3622. Al-Tirmidhi said: the hadeeth is hasan saheeh).
6.It was reported that Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu said: “O Ansaar, dye your hair red and yellow, and be different from the A’aajim (Persians).” (Musnad Ahmad:Hadith 21780)
7.Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu dyed his hair with henna and katam. (Muslim:Hadith 2341).
All these hadiths make it clear that Muslim men and women can dye their hair with katam and henna . Katam is a Yemeni plant produces reddish black colour where as Henna produces red colour. When these are combined they produce a shade between red and black colour .So Muslim men and women can dye with red and brown colours but they are not allowed to dye their hair with black colour.
This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said: There are people who dye their hair black like the crops of pigeons; they will never smell the fragrance of Paradise.” (Abu Dawood:Hadith 4212; Nasaa’i :Hadith 5075).
16. Underarms, pubic hair and nails should be cut with in forty days:
Both Muslim men and women should cut their pubic hair , underarms and nails with in forty days. This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Anas ibn Malik radi Allahu anhu that a time limit has been prescribed for us for clipping the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking hair under the armpits, shaving the pubes, that it should not be neglected far more than forty nights.(Muslim)
Any method can be used for the removal of the hair and nails .Nails should not however be cut with teeth.
17. Dress of men and women should not be tight/thin to show physical features:
Muslim men and women should not wear a dress which exposes their physique. It is against modesty to wear these kinds of dress even before the members of same genders.
Following hadiths make this point clear:
1.Narrated Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam said: There are two types, amongst the denizens of Hell, I have yet not seen them.
2.The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said:"There will be, in the last days of my Ummah (nation), women who are dressed and undressed. Curse them: they are accursed."(At-Tabarani)
The dressed but undressed women or women who are naked despite wearing dresses are those who wear thin or tight clothes to show their physical features .These kind of women are cursed because Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam did dua against them.
The same in applicable on men that they should not wear clothes which expose their private parts and they should not sit in a position which exposes their private pats as mentioned in hadith:
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam forbade two ways of wearing clothes and two kinds of dealings. (A) He forbade the dealings of the Mulamasa and the Munabadha. In the Mulamasa transaction the buyer just touches the garment he wants to buy at night or by daytime, and that touch would oblige him to buy it. In the Munabadha, one man throws his garment at another and the latter throws his at the former and the barter is complete and valid without examining the two objects or being satisfied with them (B) The two ways of wearing clothes were Ishtimal-as-Samma, i e., to cover one's shoulder with one's garment and leave the other bare: and the other way was to wrap oneself with a garment while one was sitting In such a way that nothing of that garment would cover one's private part (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 710)
This should however be kept in mind that men are advised to conceal their body between abdomen and knee .They are not sinful if other parts of their body are revealed.
18.Dress of men should be above ankles:
A man can wear any dress but it should be above ankles because prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam has issued a severe warning against those people who keep their dress below ankles.
Following hadiths make this point clear:
1. Narrated `Abd Allah bin `Umar: The Prophet said: "Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at the person who drags his garment (behind him) out of conceit. On that Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Apostle! One side of my izar hangs low if I do not take care of it." The Prophet said, "You are not one of those who do that out of conceit."(Bukhari)
2.Narrated Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu: The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said: "The part of an izar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire."(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Number 678)
3.Narrated Abu Huraira radi Allahu anhu: Allah's Apostle said, "Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at a person who drags his Izar ( behind him) out of pride and arrogance (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Number 679)
4.Narrated `Abdullah ibn `Umar radi Allahu anhu: Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam said: "While a man was trailing his izar on the ground, suddenly Allah made him sink into the earth and he will go on wailing in the earth until the Day of Resurrection."(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Number 681)
5.Abdullah Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu narrated:"The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said: "On the Day of Judgement, Allah will not look upon one who trails his garment along out of pride." (Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 674;At Tirmidhee)
6.Narrated Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu: The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam observed: "Three are the (persons) with whom Allah would neither speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor would look at them nor would absolve them, and there is a painful chastisement for them." The Messenger of Allah repeated it three times. Abu Dharr remarked: "They failed and they lost; who are these persons, Messenger of Allah?" Upon this he observed: "They are: the one who makes (his garment) hang down on the ground , the re- counter of obligation, and the seller of goods by false oath."(Muslim)
If it is done unintentionally or in haste than the person should pick up his clothes and he is not counted among sinners .
Two hadiths make this point clear:
1.Narrated Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhu : The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said: "Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at the person who drags his garment (behind him) out of conceit. On that Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Apostle! One side of my izar hangs low if I do not take care of it." The Prophet said, "You are not one of those who do that out of conceit."(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 675)
2.Narrated Abu Bakrah radi Allahu anhu: The solar eclipse occurred while we were sittwith the Prophet. He got up dragging his garment (on the ground) hurriedly till he reached the mosque. The people turned (to the mosque) and he offered a two-Rak`at prayer until the eclipse was over. Then he faced us and said: "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, so if you see a thing like this (eclipse) then offer the prayer and invoke Allah until He remove that state."(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 676)
19.Plucking is not allowed for Muslim women:
In Islam it is not allowed for women to pluck their eye brows .Any one who does so strictly violates the commands of Allah and His Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam.
Following hadith make this point clear:
The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said: "Allah has cursed the Washimat and the Mustawshimat, the Namisat and the Mutanammisat, and the Mutafallijat for beauty, who change what Allah has created." (Sahih Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, and At-Tirmidhi)
The Washimat are the tattooers, The Mustawshimat are the people who are tattooed.
The Namisat pluck the eyebrows to straighten them or to make them thinner
The Mutanammisat are the people whose eyebrows are plucked.
The Mutafallijat for beauty are the peoples who widen the gaps between their teeth for the sake of beautification
Abdullah ibn Masood radi Allahu anhu: said that Allaah has cursed tattooers and those who are tattooed, and those women who have their teeth filed for beauty and those who have their hair plucked and thus alter Allaah's creation. A woman asked him: "What is all this?" He replied: "Should I not curse the one whom Allaah's Messenger salal laho aliehi wasalam has cursed? And it is in the Book of Allaah." She said: "I read the Qur'an from cover to cover but did not find that in it (ie. prohibition of tattooing, filling the teeth and plucking facial hair)." He said: "If you had read it thoroughly, you would have found it." Allah says: "Whatever Allah's Messenger salal laho aliehi wasalam: gives you, take it, and whatever he has forbidden, refrain from it." (Muslim)
If husband demands his wife to do so she should not obey him by disobeying Allah swt. Women can however remove their hair from chin and upper lips provided that they are dense and resemble with the hair of men.
20.Muslim women cannot use perfumes in public:
Muslim women cannot use perfume in public because it can seduce others .Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam has strictly condemned those women who use perfume in public.
Following hadiths make this point clear:
1.Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam said:"Any woman who wears perfume and passes by some people who smell her perfume is like one who commits adultery or fornication." (Musnad Ahmad: 4/418)
2.Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu said thata woman passed by him smelling strongly of scent. He called to her, "O slave of the powerful. Are you going to the mosque?" She said that she was. He said: "Go back and wash it (the perfume) off. I heard the Messenger (saw) of Allah said ": Any woman who wears perfume then goes out to the mosque, so that the fragrance can be discerned, her prayers will not be accepted until she performs ghusl like the ghusl to be performed when in a state of janaabah.(obligatory bath done after sexual intercourse) (Musnad Ahmad: 2/444)
21.Muslim women can do make up but cannot do wudoo with nailpolish:
Muslim women are allowed to do make up in Islam as mentioned in following hadith:
Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu has related that the Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam has said, 'The perfume for men is that whose odour is apparent but whose colour is hidden and the perfume for the women is those whose colour is apparent but whose odour is hidden like henna and saffron.' (At-Tirmidhi and Nasa’ee)
But women should be careful that if they are using nail polish it should be removed before every wudoo because nail polish is like plastic coating which acts as a shield and thus prevents nails from proper washing.
22.Muslim men are not allowed to do colourful make up but should use perfumes:
Muslim men are not allowed to do colourful makeup but they can use perfume .This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu has related that the Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam has said, 'The perfume for men is that whose odour is apparent but whose colour is hidden and the perfume for the women is those whose colour is apparent but whose odour is hidden like henna and saffron.' (At-Tirmidhi and Nasa’ee)
Prophet salal laho aliehi waslam liked the perfumes and recommended its usage.
Two hadiths highlighting this point are as follows:
1.Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi radi Allahu anhu: The Prophet salal laho aliehi waslam said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven." (Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 13, Number 8)
2.The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam is reported to have said:Made beloved to me from your world are women and perfume, and the coolness of my eyes is in prayer.Musnad (Musnad Ahmad and An-Nasa ‘i)
23.Pure red colour is prohibited for men and the best colour of dress is white:
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam has allowed his Ummah that they can wear dress of any colour they like except the red colour which are allowed for women but are not allowed for men of Ummah.
Following hadith make it clear :
Narrated Ibn e Umar radi Allahu anhu: “The Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalla) forbade mafdam” (Musnad Ahmad ; Ibn Maajah:Hadith 3591).
Mafdam is something that is filled with red.The prohibition applies only to garments that are dyed completely red. Garments that contain another colour such as white, black, brown. are not forbidden because there are hadiths that speak about the red hullah such as the hadith of al-Bara’ radi Allahu anhu who said:
“The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam was of average height. I saw him wearing a red hullah, and I have never seen anything better than him.” ( Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 739)
The Yemeni hullah usually has stripes of red and another colour usually black, it is not pure red.
It has been however mentioned in hadith that the best colour of dress is white and this colour should be preferred on ther colours.
Following two hadiths makes this point clear:
1. Ibn e Abbas radi Allahu anhu says that Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalam used to say: " Choose white clothing, as it is the best clothing. White clothing should be worn whilst living, and the dead should be buried in white."
2.Samurah bin Jundub radi Allahu anhu says: " Rasulullah salal laho aliehi wasalamsaid, "Wear white clothing because it is more taahir (neat) and clean, and also clothe your dead in it."
24.Wearing turban is sunnah, prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam used to wear black turban.
Wearing turban was practice of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam and we need to follow him and whosoever does so with the intention of following him will be rewarded. The colour of his turban was black as mentioned in the following hadith:
Jabir radi Allahu anhu said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah salal laho aliehi wasalam on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, wearing a black turban.” ( Muslim)
Same hadith is found in other books with slightly different words:
Jabir radi Allahu anhu reported that when the Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam entered Makkah on the dayof conquest, he had on him a black turban.(At-Tirmidhi : Book27, Chapter11 , Hadith 1741; Abu Dawud :Hadith 4076, Ibn e Majah:Hadith 2822)
There is another hadith telling the same thing:
Ja'far b. 'Amr b. Huraith reported his father as saying: As if I am seeing Allah's Messenger salal laho aliehi wasalam on the pulpit with a black turban on his head, and its two ends hanging betwen his shoulders. Abu Bakr (another narrator) did not make mention of:" Upon the pulpit".(Muslim : Book 7 ,Hadith 3149)
25.Combing should be from centre:
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam used to comb his hair from centre so Muslims should prefer his style combing and it is better to avoid side combing because it is not from sunnah and this style has resemblance with polytheists.
26.Shoes should be worn while sitting :
It is always better to wear shoes while sitting because it is sunnah of Rasool salal laho aliehi waslam .
This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Jabir Ibn Abdullah that 'the Prophet (Sal lahu aliehi wa Sallam) denied that the person puts on his or her shoes while standing' (Sunan Abu Dawood and Al-Albani graded this Hadith as correct).
27.Clothes and shoes should be worn from right side:
Muslim men should always wear their dress and shoes from right side.
This is mentioned in the following hadiths:
1.Narrated 'Aisha radi Allahu anhua: The Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam used to like starting from the right in performing ablution, combing his hair and putting on his shoes.(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 745)
2.Narrated Abu Huraira radi Allahu anhu: Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam said, "If you want to put on your shoes, put on the right shoe first; and if you want to take them off, take the left one first. Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off." .(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 747)
28.Muslim men and women should wear both shoes and should not wear one shoe:
Allah swt has blessed human beings with two feet so they should wear shoes on both feet and should not walk with one shoes.
This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu Allah's Apostle salal laho aliehi wasalam said, "None of you should walk, wearing one shoe only; he should either put on both shoes or put on no shoes whatsoever." .(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith 746)
29.Muslim men and women should not cover their one shoulder and leave other as uncovered:
Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam has not allowed men and women to cover their one shoulder and uncover other .
This has been mentioned in the following hadith:
Conclusion and recommendation:
In this note an attempt has been made to guide Muslims about the recommended dress code in Islam. It is our duty to follow the recommendations of Quran and Sunnah in every matter of life.May Allah swt guide us to the right path and give us taufeeq to follow Quran and sunnah in all affairs of life Ameen.
(Abu Dawood :Hadith 4099 classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
